Since its formation in 1988 as the neighborhood association for the Hanalei, Wainiha and Ha’ena communities, the HHCA has:

  • Organized community discussion on numerous development issues, including Hanalei Valley commercialization proposals, Princeville Corporation expansion plans, commercial boating in the Hanalei River estuary, and cruise ships in Hanalei Bay
  • Sponsored or prompted numerous community improvement projects, including the removal of junked cars from our communities, the cleanup of the county’s Hanalei baseyard, and periodic trash pickups along Kuhio Highway
  • Held informational meetings with the police department, civil defense authorities and parties proposing local development projects, and sponsored historical presentations and candidate forums.

Over the past decade, the HHCA has continued its work for the community by:

  • Leading the fight to stop non-permitted commercial boating activities in Hanalei Bay
  • Working to add the accreted land near the mouth of the Hanalei River to Black Pot Beach Park and participating in the park cleanup
  • Contributing labor and funds for the renovation of the Kauai Police Department’s Princeville substation
  • Working to end aircraft overflights of our neighborhoods by sponsoring the formation of the coalition to Stop Disrespectful Air Tourism
  • Adopting Waioli Beach Park, working with the county to restore access to all of the park, and organizing community workdays for the park
  • Urging the state to protect public access along beaches in Wainiha and Ha’ena by requiring adequate setbacks for new development and prohibiting seawalls and fences that harm access
  • Sponsoring litter cleanups on Kuhio Highway in Ha’ena and Wainiha
  • Lobbying the county to create a master plan to regulate commercial activities at our beach parks
  • Working with the county to plan for future community uses of the Hanalei Courthouse
  • Leading the effort against illegal sandwichboard signs along our streets
  • Providing testimony to the state in support of regulations to protect our Special Management Areas and state Conservation lands in Ha’ena
  • Sponsoring County Council candidate forums and sponsoring talks by the Civil Defense department, the Kauai Police Department and Princeville developers
  • Working with the Hanalei Roads Committee and the state Department of Transportation on signage to restore courtesy at our one-lane bridges
  • Providing input and consultation to the county Planning Department regarding development proposals in our neighborhoods
  • Providing testimony to the County Council on ordinances to strengthen shoreline setback rules and regulate commercial activities in county parks.
